Frequently Asked Questions About Driving Licence & Medical Certificates

Yes, in most cases. When you apply for a provisional licence for a higher licence class for the first time, a medical certificate is always required, regardless of your age.

For a regular five-year renewal it depends on your age – see the next question.

The higher licence classes are C1, C1E, C, CE, D1, D1E, D and DE – trucks, buses and heavy trailers.

Usually not. When renewing a higher licence class, a health declaration and a basic vision certificate are normally enough if you are under 45 at the time of application. From age 45, a medical certificate is always required.

One important exception: if you obtained your higher licence class before 19 January 2013, are renewing it for the first time, and turn 45 before the expiry date on your licence, you must apply for renewal with a medical certificate before you turn 45. If you don't, your higher licence class becomes invalid the day after your 45th birthday.

Normally not. For a category B licence you submit a health declaration and a vision certificate, and the vision certificate can be issued by a licensed optician.

A medical certificate for category B only becomes relevant if you have a medical condition that needs assessing, or if Transportstyrelsen has sent you a formal request for a medical certificate. If you've received such a letter, contact us and we'll go through exactly what's being asked for.

Yes, in both cases. To apply for a taxi driver licence (taxiförarlegitimation), a medical certificate is required under Transportstyrelsen's medical requirements, and a medical certificate is also required when the licence is renewed.

A taxi driver licence is renewed every ten years. From age 45, medical checks are required more frequently than that. Transportstyrelsen sends out an application form ahead of renewal, stating which documents you need to submit.

Three different documents that are easy to confuse:

• Health declaration – you fill this in yourself about your own health. No doctor required.
• Vision certificate – a vision test only. May be issued by a licensed optician or a doctor.
• Medical certificate – a medical examination and assessment that only a doctor may carry out. It also includes a vision test.

Which documents you need depends on licence class and age. When renewing a higher licence class under age 45, a health declaration and vision certificate are usually enough; from age 45, a medical certificate is required. All three may be at most two months old when the application is submitted.

These are two completely different things that are often required at the same time.

The medical certificate is a medical document showing that you meet Transportstyrelsen's health requirements for the licence class. It is issued by a doctor.

YKB (Certificate of Professional Competence) is a professional qualification required to drive goods or passenger transport professionally. YKB is renewed through further training with a training provider – not with a doctor.

We issue medical certificates. YKB is arranged through a driving school or training company.

The medical certificate must not be dated more than two months before the application. The same two-month rule applies to the health declaration and vision certificate.

This means you shouldn't book the examination too early. Book well ahead of the deadline, but within two months of submitting the application.

Your higher licence class becomes invalid the day after it expires, and you may then no longer drive vehicles that require that class. Your application must therefore reach Transportstyrelsen before the licence class expires.

You'll find the expiry date on your licence: in field 11 on the back, or in point 4b on the front if this is your first renewal.

In most cases, the certificate is issued the same day as your visit, provided the documentation is complete. We send it electronically directly to Transportstyrelsen.

If further documentation is needed – for example a blood test or a specialist's report – it takes longer. We'll tell you right away during the visit if that applies to you.

Bring the following to your appointment:

• Valid ID (passport or driving licence)
• The prescription for your glasses or contact lenses, if you use them
• A list of the medications you take
• Relevant medical records or specialist reports, if you have a medical condition that needs assessing
• If you have diabetes: results from your most recent retinal photography screening, available via 1177

You don't need to order any form from Transportstyrelsen in advance. We fill in the certificate on site and send it digitally.

It depends on how you meet us.

At a visit to our clinic in Tranemo, the vision test is included in the price. You don't need to see an optician.

For a video visit, it's not included. In that case, you arrange a vision certificate separately with an optician or ophthalmologist, which normally costs around SEK 200. The vision test can be done before or after the doctor's appointment.

A licensed doctor carries out a health assessment in accordance with Transportstyrelsen regulations. It includes a vision test, a blood pressure check and a general medical assessment, as well as a review of your medical history and medications.

For certain conditions, additional tests may be needed, for example a blood test if diabetes is a concern.

No – not on the basis of the diagnosis alone. Since 15 January 2026, the specific medical requirements for ADHD and autism spectrum conditions have been removed. This means no medical assessment requiring a doctor's certificate is carried out simply because you have one of these diagnoses.

The change applies to all licence classes – including truck, bus and taxi driver licences.

Important exception: if, in addition to ADHD or autism, you also have another condition regulated in the medical rules – such as diabetes, epilepsy, a heart condition or a substance dependency – you are still assessed on that condition, and that condition determines what documentation you need.

It depends on how your diabetes is treated. If you are treated with any medication – for example insulin or tablets – a medical certificate must be submitted. If your diabetes is managed by diet alone, a medical certificate is normally not required.

For higher licence classes and taxi, the requirements are stricter than for category B, particularly with insulin treatment, because the risk of hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) must be assessed. Bring the results of your most recent retinal photography screening – available via 1177 – and ideally your blood glucose readings.

For higher licence classes and taxi driver licences, a visual acuity of at least 0.8 in the better eye and at least 0.1 in the weaker eye is required. Glasses and contact lenses are permitted – the requirement applies to corrected vision.

The requirement of at least 0.1 in the weaker eye cannot be met with one eye. Someone with no vision at all in one eye therefore cannot hold a truck or bus licence class, nor a taxi driver licence.

In addition to visual acuity, there are requirements on the field of vision. Bring the prescription for your glasses or lenses to your appointment.

This is a different type of case from an ordinary driving licence certificate, with its own rules and its own certificate form.

If you are applying for a licence with an alcolock condition after a drink-driving offence, medical certificates and recurring medical checks are required throughout the conditional period, and you bear the costs yourself. The medical certificate must not be older than two months when submitted. In cases involving narcotics, a licence with an alcolock condition cannot be issued.

These cases often require testing over time and sometimes medical records from your healthcare provider. Contact us before booking and we'll tell you straight away whether we can help you or whether you need to go elsewhere.

In addition to our fee, Transportstyrelsen charges a manufacturing fee of SEK 375 when your new licence card is produced. You pay this directly to Transportstyrelsen once your application is approved.

If you choose a video visit, a vision certificate from an optician is also needed, normally around SEK 200.

An in-person visit with us therefore costs SEK 1,299 with the vision test included, while a video visit plus optician comes to roughly SEK 1,499 in total. If you're within reasonable distance of Tranemo, an in-person visit is usually both cheaper and simpler.

Yes, many cases can be handled through a digital video visit.

Two things are good to know. The vision test is not included – you arrange that separately with an optician. And the doctor decides on a case-by-case basis whether the remaining examination steps can be done safely by video. For more complex cases, we may need to see you in person.

The doctor makes a medical assessment based on Transportstyrelsen requirements. In some cases, additional documentation is needed before an assessment can be made, and sometimes the doctor cannot confirm that the requirements are met.

The final decision about your licence is always made by Transportstyrelsen, not by us.

Yes. For three people or more, we offer a 15% discount, and we can come to your workplace with our mobile clinic. Within the local area this is free of charge; for longer distances, an additional fee may apply.

This works especially well for haulage companies, bus operators, driving schools and industrial employers with several drivers renewing at the same time. We also help companies with planned health examinations. Contact us well in advance and we'll plan it together.

Yes. Employers must offer a medical check to anyone who normally works at least three hours of their shift between 22:00 and 06:00, or who is likely to complete at least a third of their annual working hours during those times.

The check must be offered before the night work begins and at least every six years thereafter – every three years from the age of 50. Participation is voluntary for the employee. The rules are set out in the Swedish Work Environment Authority regulations on medical checks in working life (AFS 2023:15).
